Chapter 26

They really couldn’t carry Zheng Jingyin under such circumstances but the middle-aged man signaled that he would be fine. Xie Yuchen only hesitated for a moment before deciding that he wouldn’t worry about it.

They continued crawling down the corridor. As long as Xie Yuchen had any questions and tried to stop, the middle-aged man leading them would show them a very serious expression and urge them to follow immediately. Xie Yuchen was absolutely certain that this person didn’t know their language so he could only use gestures to communicate with them. Plus, his no-nonsense expression looked like it came from experience.

They crawled down the corridor and out of the lighted living area to another dark area, which was essentially the way they had come. Soon, they were crawling back to the place where he and Black Glasses had met up. The middle-aged man crawled into the room full of jars and headed towards the middle.

Then, he pointed to one of the jars and pointed to himself before pointing to a jar next to it and pointing to Black Glasses. After motioning for Black Glasses to climb into it, he then pointed to Xie Yuchen and motioned for him to climb into a third jar.

This basically meant that the three of them should climb into three jars respectively.

After he finished gesturing, he climbed into his own jar without hesitation.

Black Glasses and Xie Yuchen looked at each other. Xie Yuchen shook his head and then glanced at the jar that the middle-aged man had just climbed into. Black Glasses nodded.

Shaking his head meant that he wouldn’t listen to the man and glancing at the jar meant that he intended to go into the man’s jar. Black Glasses was nodding to show that he agreed with this course of action.

The two people quickly climbed into the middle-aged man’s jar and closed the lid.

But when they went in, they found that there was actually a staircase where the bottom of the jar should have been. This staircase went all the way down to the lowest level of the house.

If they hadn’t grabbed the stairs the moment they entered the jar, they would’ve fallen directly into a deep hole, which seemed to be a basement.

All houses in Japan were elevated so this hole was actually a chimney that connected the bottom of the jar to the basement.

The two quickly slid down the stairs and saw that the middle-aged man had lit a candle. They had come down from the same hole, which obviously startled the middle-aged man, but Xie Yuchen looked up and saw that there were many similar passages overhead. It appeared that many of the jars above were connected to this space.

They were currently in a long, narrow basement with walls that were covered in things that were hidden behind white cloths. Anyone with a little bit of common sense could tell at a glance that these things were picture frames of various sizes.

The basement was about three hundred square meters and very shabby, with only simple wooden walls that were covered in rows of paintings.

In the middle of this studio, there was a bed and a writing desk, along with some daily necessities piled up on the side. It seemed that this middle-aged man was living here.

The three men looked at each other.

Xie Yuchen refused to speak first. This guy hadn’t said a word to them the whole time so he had to consider the possibility that it was dangerous to speak.

But at this time, the other party finally spoke. He used English, which was very poor, but Xie Yuchen still breathed a sigh of relief. Even if the other party only knew seven or eight words, he could still communicate very clearly with gestures.

The following is a summary of their interaction, which involved communicating with gestures and simple words:

The first sentence the other party said was: “You can’t get out. You can’t leave. You have to find a way to survive here.”

“Who are you?” Xie Yuchen asked him.

“I don’t have much food left,” the man said. “Now that you’ve come, we’ll die faster. I’ll tell you what’s going on, but you have to leave after listening. I won’t cooperate with others.”

Black Glasses had been looking at the paintings, but when he moved to touch one, the middle-aged man said, “Don’t look at the paintings. All of them belong to the master here. You’ll have nightmares if you look at them. I finally managed to forget what I saw. Just don’t look at them.”

But Black Glasses had already removed the cloth that was covering the painting. Since the only light in the basement was from a single candle, the contents of the painting were blurred and hard to make out. But what could be seen was a still-life painting of this house.

The painting was very abnormal.

  1. They have the nerve to follow the man in the jar. What if the place didn’t lead to another place? If that was the case, their place with three people would be very tight (But maybe Black Glasses like it with Xiao Hua in such a condition.😄) Finally we are going to know what’s going on in this place. Thank you for the chapters.
