Chapter 33

Black Glasses returned to the room where the orchid mantises were and found that Yuri’s body had sat up at some point and was now completely covered in mantises.

Black Glasses sat with him and stared at the ancient coffin in front of him.

He couldn’t help recalling that ancient brass box. It was a rainy night in the rainforest when they went to look for the aircraft bomber that had been shot down during World War II. They were looking for it because it was said that there was special cargo on it at that time. But as they were walking, an ancient red city seemed to magically appear in the depths of the rainforest.

His eyes were still normal at that time.

How many years ago was it? How many people died when he took his companions into the ruins?

The ancient brass box was found in the center of the ancient city, which was where everyone except for him saw “that thing”.

That thing was about three meters tall. Anyone who had touched the brass box would see it at night, fall into a nightmare-like coma the next morning, and then die.

Only a few people had a chance to say a few words before they died so he didn’t know what that thing really was. All he had to go on were a few descriptions that were all vague and confusing.

Usually, their last words before they died were spoken in an ancient local dialect that sounded like, “Welcome to the city.”

In the end, he chose to take the brass box with him. The box was lost somewhere in the mud as he made his fierce escape through the rainforest, but he didn’t care about that. There was something he cared about more which had been lost together with the box. At that time, he deeply regretted it.

But that was a long time ago. He wasn’t sure whether he was the same person now.

It never occurred to him that he would see that box again.

He turned to look at Yuri’s body. He could understand Yuri’s thoughts regarding what was lost, but he didn’t know what exactly he was trying to get back.

But whatever it was, this thing had been recovered for the living and Yuri was now dead. When he thought about it, it was actually a good choice.

He pulled out the ice pick from Yuri’s throat, walked over to the ancient coffin, and began to open it.

Pulling out coffin nails with an ice pick required some ingenuity, but he was very skilled and knew the trick.

The last coffin nail was quickly pulled out, but the lid of the copper-horned coffin was very heavy so he had to push it open slowly.

A violent stench came out from inside the small gap he had opened, but he didn’t dare open the lid any more than that. When the stench finally dissipated, however, he immediately kicked the lid off. There was a fat female corpse inside that was dressed in rotting silk and wearing a strange headdress. As soon as the contents of the coffin came into contact with the oxygen outside, the corpse’s skin turned from pale white to black and the silk’s color began to fade like a dying flame.

Black Glasses pulled the wine he had stolen from the refrigerator in the big fish’s room out of his pants pocket and sprinkled it on the female corpse.

No matter what Yuri really wanted to summon, this thing could only appear in the body of a female corpse.

He set the body on fire without an ounce of hesitation, the violent stench combining with the burnt smell as the body began to burn at an unimaginable speed.

For a brief moment, the surroundings were too bright.

He smiled—this was basically foolproof—and then spoke to the man behind him, “Why didn’t you stop me?”

“Well, because it doesn’t matter,” the man said.

Black Glasses glanced behind him and saw that Beliak was standing there, his skin appearing pink in the firelight.

Black Glasses watched as Beliak started to straighten his hunched body. When the other man finally reached his full height, Black Glasses could see that his stomach was actually very big, just like a pregnant woman.

  1. Wait, did we know Glasses had regular eyesight as recently as what he’s talking about here? I had the impression he’s always had an issue with his eyes 🤔
