Chapter 16

Black Glasses looked at Zheng Jingyin and motioned for him to lower the flashlight a little bit—the light was too bright—right as he heard Xie Yuchen say something strange, “Did you see what you lost?”

He was confused. “Lost? I didn’t lose anything besides the signal just now. Does that count?”

“It shouldn’t.”

Black Glasses found it a little strange and wanted to ask for more details, but at this time, a vague shadow suddenly flashed through his mind.

There was that brass box just now.

He suddenly realized that the box came from the depths of his dusty memory, and something was trying to mimic it. He became absorbed in his thoughts as he tried to recall it.

The memory happened so long ago, but he still remembered the box pretty clearly. It was more than twenty years ago in a rainforest in Laos. There was a majestic downpour and countless people were screaming. It was a horrible memory for him.

What happened at that time was all because of this box. Where was it dug up from? Why was it there? That box had been with them in the rainforest but had disappeared when they were frantically making a run for it. It had been in his hand one second and then disappeared the next…yes, he had lost that box.

The memory was creepy but he just smiled and took a deep breath.

Why did this thing suddenly appear now? Was it an illusion? Why did Xie Yuchen ask me this question? Does he know something?

The intense discomfort brought his recollection to an immediate halt. He was just about to ask Xie Yuchen what he knew when the other man said, “If you see it, you must not acknowledge that you’ve seen it. Otherwise, I’m afraid something bad will happen.”

This time, the words got stuck in his throat and all that came out was a hum of acknowledgment. The other party didn’t give him a chance to respond and continued telling him the three rules.

The vivid recollection of that memory just now gave Black Glasses a burst of energy, but as he listened to these rules, he regained his composure.

“That’s pretty interesting. I won’t be able to sleep tonight,” he said.

“There’s a question here. Mainly, what counts as ‘pretending not to see it’? And who is the judge of that?”

That’s right, Black Glasses thought to himself. Did I successfully pretend not to see that box just now? He looked at Zheng Jingyin. This guy probably didn’t see it.

“Is your neighbor trying to scare you? Maybe Yuri is using him to scare you away from this place.” As Black Glasses spoke, he suddenly had a strong desire to recall what happened back then but he immediately suppressed it.

Now wasn’t the time to recall those memories.

“In short, don’t explore too deep. We may need to discuss things. This matter may not be as simple as we originally thought.”

“Yes, boss.” As Black Glasses said this, he looked down at the bottom of the pit again but didn’t see anything there.

“Comrade Zheng Jingyin, we’re all compatriots here. Please tell me you aren’t on the Russians’ side and playing me for a fool.” He smiled at Zheng Jingyin.

“I stand with the old lady, but as long as I can help you with your work, I’ll help.”

Black Glasses pointed to the surrounding area, “Does your old lady know that her son is digging so many holes around the house?”

Zheng Jingyin looked at the bottom of the hole-riddled pond and sighed.

“I can’t answer that, but it seems like he’s digging for something? Does he know that someone is going to kill him so, like us, he’s looking for the feng shui array in his home?”

Black Glasses gave a noncommittal hum before turning around and asking, “Why did you follow me? Are you here to spy on me?”

“There are many antiques in the house. The servants are worried that you’ll steal them.”

“Oh, a lot of antiques?” Black Glasses said.

“Did I disclose some information I shouldn’t have?”

“No, I own way too many antiques. Don’t worry.”

When the two men returned to the corridor, Black Glasses started walking towards the fork in the path leading up to the hill with the huge building complex.

“It’s so late, why don’t we explore it tomorrow?” Zheng Jingyin said. “There are no servants in the main building complex and we can easily get lost. Plus, your feet are covered in mud.”

Black Glasses completely ignored him and walked directly up the hill. Soon, the main entrance to the building complex appeared. It was an unremarkable wooden door that was aged and unadorned, with a moss-covered stone statue of a fisherman next to it.

There was a very thick iron chain barring entry to the door, as if had been sealed for a long time.

“You know, if you tell me what you’re thinking, it’ll be easier for me to help you,” Zheng Jingyin said as he chased after him. “If you want to open the door, I’ll call a servant.”

“Qi Qiu warned us that the next disaster would be in the East, and the most likely place is here,” Black Glasses said. “There must be something strange happening in the place where the feng shui array was set up. And now the old lady’s son has dug a bunch of holes in the pond, which is very abnormal. How long has it been since you’ve seen him?”

Zheng Jingyin obviously couldn’t answer so he took out his cell phone and called a servant. Xie Yuchen’s voice suddenly came over Black Glasses’ headset, “Do you suspect that something has happened?”

“Mm-hmm.”

“Wait for me, I’ll head over.”

“No need,” Black Glasses said at the same time he heard another foreigner’s voice in the headset say to Xie Yuchen, “Your friend will die tonight.”
