Chapter 88 White Sand

Fatty told me that after a short time had passed, someone on the market began to sell a kind of fine sand similar to salt. It was very expensive and had no effect but was said to be a kind of reference sample. Fatty ended up asking the resellers who was buying and selling the stuff but couldn’t get a detailed answer. It was strange not being able to find the people from either end of the business transaction.

But Fatty still had a strong feeling: this fine white sand was from that thing’s body that he had sold before. He was fascinated by this thing’s mysterious background and was a lot like me with a riddle back in those days—no thought for tea or rice. It was better to die than not figure it out.

In the end, the only solid clue he got was that someone told him the sand was used for comparison.

Someone was looking for the desert where this white sand originally came from and the only clue was to compare the white sand’s composition sample with the sand from other deserts.

“Is this sand of any special use?” I asked. “Does this white sand have some kind of magic power that can be used to deal with that kind of corpse?”

“No, this white sand is just a filler. The whole thing is rather ordinary. Fighting corpses may sound mysterious but it’s nothing more than the process of mummification. But the earliest people who possessed this technology came from that desert. The people who came later ended up distorting a lot of the information in the ancient texts. They always believed that the white sands from that desert were a key factor so they’ve been collecting sand from deserts all over China. Actually, the sand’s not important,” Fatty said. “You’ll never guess the age of the ancient books that recorded these things.”

I looked at Fatty and nodded at him in a silent gesture that meant he should speak quickly. “They’re from the pre-Qin period,” Fatty said.

It was a time when alchemists were running amuck so I wasn’t surprised that such scientific achievements had been made. Fatty continued, “The ancient books came from that desert and have something to do with a special civilization.”
